Recognizing the contributions of their parents when alive, the Nigerian Army is providing N1.4 billion scholarships to 9,451 children of deceased soldiers.
Security Watch Africa (SWA) gathered that the scholarships covered the 2022/2023 Academic Session.
“As part of activities for the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2022, some beneficiaries of the annual Nigerian Army Educational Scholarship programme were presented with their awards.”
The gesture, which is in line with the Chief of Army Staff, (COAS), Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya’s drive to continue to boost the morale of soldiers, was extended to the deceased soldiers’ children in primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
The breakdown of the scholarships for the 2022/2023 Academic Session stated “the Nigerian Army is providing educational scholarships to children of deceased personnel as follows; Primary School Level- 4,157 Secondary School Level- 4,191 and Tertiary School Level – 1,103.
“Total number of beneficiaries is 9,451. Total amount to be spent is about One Billion, Four Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,400,000,000.00)”.
This year’s NADCEL was celebrated in Owerri, Imo State from the 1st – 6th July, 2022.
The Nigerian Army Day Celebration is an important annual event in the calendar of the Nigerian Army to remember the 30 months old Nigerian civil war towards drawing lessons from it.
