Two suspects have appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 10 March, following their arrest by the East London based Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), for selling dagga to students.
The suspects allegedly operate a mobile spaza shop parked in front of the East London College in Southernwood, where they pretended to sell food and drinks to the students when their main business was selling dagga.
The team received information about their activities, monitored the suspects for dsys before swooping in on them.
According to the Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Obed Ngwenya, a search conducted on the trailer where the suspects sell food led to the discovery of 82 packets of dagga.
Ngwenya said the seized items have been taken in for further analysis.
The Police Chief commended the team for their joint effort in ensuring that the perpetrators face the consequences of their actions.
In a related development, a female drug lord and her male accomplice, are in custody for drug dealing in Pretoria.
It was learnt that an intelligence driven operation conducted by the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau resulted in the arrest of the suspects.
The woman, 47, and her male accomplice, 46, will appear in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on 11 March 2021.
The Police said investigation team pounced on the suspects at a house in Helena Heights in Somerset West where they seized drugs with an estimated street value of R500,000. Dagga plants, syringes with dagga oil, magic mushrooms, capsules, and six 5 litre bottles of ethanol.
“ Cash suspected to be from the proceeds of the drug trade was also seized. Follow- up search and seizure operations will continue to eliminate drug production. The suspects will also be profiled to determine if they have pending drug-related cases against them,” the Police said.
