Police efforts to root out criminality in the Nyanga precinct has resulted in the arrest of ten suspects allegedly culpable for rape, murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of hijacked vehicles and possession of an imitation firearm.
Speaking on the arrests in a statement for the Western Cape South Africa Police Service (SAPS), Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, said three of the suspects aged between 20 and 28, had appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate Court for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl after consuming liquor together in the Browns Farm area.
Rwexana added that a 24-year-old suspect was also arrested for allegedly raping another girl after they were drinking together in New Rest Informal Settlement in Crossroads.
He further stated that two unlicensed firearms and ammunition and an imitation firearm were also recovered during crime prevention operations that were conducted in the Browns Farm area.
“ One firearm was recovered in Debeza Street yesterday, a second firearm and an imitation firearm were recovered this morning. Three suspects aged 18, 25 and 32 were arrested. A 21-year-old woman was also arrested yesterday on a charge of murder. The suspect had allegedly stabbed her cousin, aged 27, after an argument.
“ Two other suspects aged 23 and 24 were arrested in possession of hijacked vehicles in Browns Farm area. The suspects are expected to appear in Athlone and Wynberg Magistrate Court facing charges of murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and imitation firearm and rape, ” he stated.
Members of the Western Cape SAPS management also applauded the team for their vigilance and concerted efforts in the fight against crime.
