A 25-year-old man, Abdulrazaq Mohammed, has been arrested for the murder of one Onajite Okolejo, a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), in Warri, Delta state.
Okolejo, was reportedly shot by the suspect, and one Sahlisu, at large, who is said to be the son of Etsu Nupe’s of Hausa Quarters in Warri.
According to a statement by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Edafe Bright, a Deputy Superintendnet of Police (DSP), the Chairman of VGN, Zone 12 Hausa Quarters, Warri, reported the matter to A Division.
Bright said: “ The chairman said on April 4, he received a phone call from Okolejo, aged 36, a VGN member working under the unit that he was being attacked by some armed gang. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), ‘A’ Division Warri, T.Y Mammud, a Cheif Superintendnet of Police (CSP), mobilized patrol team immediately to the scene and rescued the victim to the hospital.
“ While in the hospital, the boy made a dying declaration that one of the suspect that attacked and shot him was a boy called Sahlisu ‘m’ surname unknown (alias Black Arrow) and he is the biological son of Etsu Nupe of Hausa Quarters, Warri.
“ The Commissioner of Police (CP), Ari Muhammed Ali mandated that the DPO must do everything possible to see that the directive pay off as operatives moved into action, expanded their tentacles, through intelligence gathering and discreet investigation tracked and arrested one Abdulrazaq Mohammed who confessed to be among the gang that murdered the victim and also corroborated what the deceased VGN Member said.
“ Effort is ongoing to ensure the arrest of the fleeing suspect, members of the public are advised to give all information that will lead to the arrest of the other suspect. ”
In another development, the Eagle-Net Special Squad of the Delta State Police Command, has arrested the ring leader of a bank robbery syndicate, Joshua Ogheneovo, 32.
The arrest of the suspect followed intelligence that had filtered to the Police that the suspect and his gang were planning to attack and rob unsuspecting customers and dispossess them of their valuables and money at Ughelli First bank.
The PPRO who confirmed the arrest, said it was in compliance with the Commissioner of Police directives, that all tactical commanders must be proactive and ensure that criminals terrorizing the state are arrested, and brought to book.
He said: “ Based on intelligence gathered that a robbery syndicate is planning to attack and rob unsuspecting customers and dispossess them of their valuables and money at Ughelli First bank, the Commander Eagle-Net Special Squad, Dimka Usman, a Superintendnet of Police (SP), mobilized his men of Eagle Net Special Squad led by Yunusa Danyaya, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), on intensive stop and search operation in a bid to prevent such ugly situation from occurring.
“ While on the stop and search duty, one of a notorious ring leader Joshua Ogheneovo of Uduphori town Patani Local Government Area, was intercepted and on the spot search was carried out on him. Exhibits recovered include one double barrel automatic pump action gun with 25 rounds of live cartridges, one Toyota Highlander Jeep ash colour with Reg. No. DSZ 348 KM and one Bontel handset. ”
He said the suspect confessed that the Highlander Jeep was snatched from the owner on gun point.
“Effort is ongoing for the possible arrest of the remaining gang members and in no time, they will be brought to book,” Bright assured.
