A 65-year-old man, who had allegedly raped his 11-year-old granddaughter, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The accused was arraigned at the Mount Fletcher Regional court, after he was arrested by operatives of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
According to the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt. -Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga, on April 1, 2020, the victim was with her siblings at Lower Thokoana, Mount Fletcher area, when she was called by her grandfather and defiled.
“ He instructed her to take off her clothes and raped her several times and after that offered her between two to four rand. She reported the incident to her grandmother and a case was immediately opened and assigned to FCS for further investigation.
“ The grandfather was arrested on April 5, 2020 and granted bail. He went back and forth to court until he was was found guilty at the Mount Fletcher Regional court on April 14, 2021 and sentenced to undergo life imprisonment, ” she said.
Ntshinga congratulated the meticulous and professional investigation by the investigator, D/Sgt Nolufefe Garane, for the good investigation.
He stated that the great collaboration between SAPS and NPA and courts cannot go unnoticed in this success.
” The sentence is the outcome of the SAPS unwavering commitment in the fight against crimes against woman and children and hard work of the investigation officer and other specialized disciplines of the SAPS together with the NPA, ” she said.
