The injured victims are being treated by the Police Authority.
This was contained in a statement obtained by Security Watch Africa (SWA) on Tuesday, issued by the Ag. Director-General, Ghana Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kwesi Ofori.
He said “The leadership of the Northern Regional Police Command, led by its Regional Commander, COP Timothy Yoosa Bonga, on 21st and 22nd September, 2021, visited the victims of the incident that led to the interdiction of the four police officers.
“They conveyed the apologies of the Police Administration to them and the acting Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, spoke on phone to the affected victims to reassure them that the matter would be dealt with decisively.
“Police have since facilitated the medical treatment of the affected persons and paid for the full cost of the treatments. This is in addition to the psychological support provided them by a team of clinical psychologists sent from Accra at the behest of the Police Administration.”
The statement also commended the Regional Commander, COP Timothy Yoosa Bonga and his team for acting swiftly to deepen the cordial relationship between the Police and the community.
“We also appreciate and commend members of the community for their understanding as we await the outcome of the disciplinary action.
“In a related development, a group of irate youth at about 0800hours on 25th September, 2021, embarked on an unlawful demonstration and vandalised the Police Divisional Headquarters building and VRA office in protest against the incident. We will make sure that the culprits are arrested and brought to book.”
The statement also cautioned the youth to desist from any acts that might disturb the peace of the area “because they will be arrested and prosecuted.”
“In this regard, we commend the Chiefs and opinion leaders for their understanding and urge them to continue supporting efforts by the Police in ensuring peace and security in Tamale and its environs.”
