To encourage schooling and reward outstanding performances, the Nigerian Army has organized debates and essay competition among students in Damasak under Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State.
The competition among the students was monitored by Security Watch Africa (SWA).
Damasak, which is the headquarters of Mobbar LGA, have been plagued by incidences of Boko Haram insurgency as it is situated by the fringes of the Lake Chad.
The several attacks by Boko Haram terrorists in their failed bids to control the community have not only made education a hard task, but had also made it difficult for the supposedly quiet and prosperous community to do its fishing, farming and commerce.
Normalcy has, however, returned to the community through the efforts of the Nigerian Army, whose 5 Brigade is in charge of the area.
The Brigade organized the DebateEssay competition among the students of the area as part of its civil military cooperation activities.
At the end of the competition, Habiba Hassan was the winner of Theatre Commander, Major General Christopher Musa Prize for Emerging Best Overall in Essay Writing.
Rukaiya Hassan won the MNJTF Commander, Major General Abdul Khalifah Ibrahim Prize for Emerging Best Student in Debate.
The Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Suleiman Tilawan Prize for Emerging Second Best in Essay Writing was won by Mariam Khamis.
The event was graced by the Brigade Commander and Chairman of the local government.
