The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Monday disclosed that the personnel of the Command have rebuffed a daring attack on its Marine Police Patrol Team by suspected armed sea pirates.

Akwa Ibom State Police Command, which was made available to Security Watch Africa (SWA), the attack took place along the Oron-Calabar waterways on 11th January, 2025, at about 1:00 p.m.
It said “The patrol team, during a routine operation, came under heavy attack from the criminals, who were armed and dressed in military camouflage.
“The assailants, numbering about 24 and operating in three speedboats, attempted to overpower our gallant officers in a gun duel.”
Despite their numerical advantage, the statement said, the Police officers put up a brave fight but sustained losses as two officers, Inspector Sunday Usuyak and Inspector Edet Enenyi, sustained gunshot injuries.
It further disclosed that they are receiving top-notch medical attention.
The statement also noted that one officer, Inspector Udi Emenyi, is currently unaccounted for.
“The Akwa Ibom Police Command has swung into immediate action, deploying a specialized search and rescue team to track and recover the missing officer.
“The Nigerian Navy and other Security services have been duly informed and is collaborating with the Police for the operations.
“Let it be unequivocally stated that the Akwa Ibom Police Command will stop at nothing to ensure the perpetrators of this heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice. Our waterways will not be a safe haven for criminals.”
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, according to the statement, has visited the scene and assured residents of intensified patrols and heightened security in the affected areas.
“The Command remains resolute in its mission to protect lives and property across the state.
“We call on members of the public to provide credible information that could aid ongoing operations.
“The Akwa Ibom Police Command will keep the public updated as further developments unfold.” it stated.
