Detectives at the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga Province, have started an intensive investigation into the killing of a 62-year taxi owner in Kwaggafontein.
The deceased was reportedly gunned down on the evening of Wednesday May 5.
Preliminary investigation indicated that aged man was walking in the street with his friend, few metres away from his house in a place called Tweefontein Extension (in Kwaggafontein), when he was shot.
It was reported that a group of four armed men driving in a white BMW drove by and fired shots, fatally wounding the man.
“The suspects then made a U-Turn to ensure that he was dead. They reportedly fired more shots at the victim who was already lying on the ground and fled the scene thereafter. Authorities were notified about the incident and a murder case was opened hence the manhunt.
“This incident occurred at a time in which the Province has had a high rate of such killings with notable number of suspects being arrested and appearing court. We will continue to do all possible to end the killings in this area. This situation has prompted us as Police management in the Province to dig deep in our investigation.
“However, we still urge members of the public to come on board and assist with information so that those who are responsible are swiftly brought to book, to prevent loss of life, ” Major General Thulani Phahla said.
He called on members of the public with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Difaga John Malope at 0824417591, or call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111.
“Alternatively, members of the public can send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” he said.
