Operatives of the South African Police Service (SAPS), have secured the 18years conviction of a 45-year-old man, who allegedly assaulted and raped his girlfriend in Upington.
It was gathered that the accused had on March 11, gone out on a date with the lady, who later abandoned him for another man.
Angered by the act, the accused reportedly dragged the victim home, where he assaulted her and raped her.
The accused fled but was arrested following diligent investigation by Sergeant Thabiso Mashlishili attached to Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Upington.
The Acting District Commissioner of Mgcawu Besnaar, applauded the team for securing the 18 years direct imprisonment handed down to the accused for assault and rape on Thursday, March 11.
Besnar said: “ The 45-year-old convict, was in a domestic relationship with the victim and on February 29, 2020, both went out together to a tavern. Later on, the victim left the tavern without notifying her partner. He started looking for her and he later found her with another boyfriend.
“ He started assaulting the victim and dragged her to their residence where he raped her. After the incident, he decided to run away whereby the police launched a manhunt. He was later arrested and remained in custody during the period of trial.
“ The SAPS consider violence against women and children to be a priority and urge the public to refrain from such acts of degrading nature and violation of human rights.”
