The South African Police Service (SAPS), has confirmed the arrest of three armed robbers, who had attempted to rob a liquor store in Umbilo Road, Kwazulu-Natal Province.
The suspects were arrested with firearms and 22 rounds of ammunitions.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya, who spoke on the arrest in a statement, said the employees at the store were busy locking the business premises on Umbilo Road when they were held by three armed suspects.
“ Whilst they were busy robbing the employees, the Umbilo Police officers swiftly responded to the scene. Three suspects were arrested at the scene and one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the Police officers. The suspect was shot on the arm.
“ He was treated at the scene and was placed under arrest. Two of the suspects were found in possession of illegal firearms with 22 rounds of ammunition. The preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the recovered firearms were stolen at Greenwood Park and Durban Central.
“ The suspects aged between 28 and 33 will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of attempted robbery, illegal possession of firearms, illegal possession of ammunition as well as pointing of a firearm, ” he said.
