To foster community based policing, the South African Police Service (SAPS), have engaged in a sensitization campaign at Mntuntloni, a rural community in Eastern Cape Province.
Security Watch Africa reports that the information sharing session had members of the community and different components and sections of SAPS in attendance.
Sergeant Vava, who spoke for the Police disclosed that the community was educated on sexual offences, forced child marriages and abduction, contravention of COVID-19 disaster management regulations, sexual harassment and other sundry crimes.
The residents were also urged to use technogies, such as cellphones available to them to report crimes to the Police when they happen.
“The objective behind this initiative was to educate traditional rural community of Mntuntloni who are located very far from the suburbs. Because of this demarcation people of this community are somehow disadvantaged to information and new developments in government policies including the good work done by SAPS and frontline services rendered by the South African Police Service to the larger community.
“The rural community was also encouraged to use modern technology available to them such as cellphones to report crimininal activities taking place around them to the Police for further investigation. Crime stop contact telephone numbers were shared with the community.
“The information shared by the Police was well received and welcomed by the royal house of Amaqhinebe and the community at large,” he said.
