As part of measures to reduce crime in Chris Hani District, operatives of South African Police Service (SAPS), has launched Operation ‘Gijima Tsotsi’.
The operation which was first conducted around Cofimvaba and Engcobo Policing precinct led to the arrest of 17 suspects.
According to the Office of the Provincial Commissioner, Eastern Cape, the operation is initiated with the aim to stamp the authority of the State in reducing crimes throughout the Chris Hani District.
A statement by the Police Commissioner signed by Captain Khaya Tonjeni, the concept of the operation is to monitor drug trafficking and stolen property through stop and searches and to monitor compliance of COVID-19 readjusted level one regulations.
He said: “ Three suspects arrested for selling liquor without licence, one arrested for drunken driving. Nine were arrested for contravention of Disaster Management Act failure to wear mask. One suspect was arrested for possession of drugs, three suspects arrested for selling liquor without out licence, one suspect was arrested for dealing in dagga, one suspect arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm.
“ Ten suspects were arrested for drunken disorderly. All the arrested suspects will appear before the Cofimvaba and Engcobo Magistrate’s Courts respectively on Monday, March 22. ”
