A 37-year-old man is set to be arraigned in court for allegedly raping his 79-year-old grandmother in Thabong, Free State, South Africa.
According to the victim, the suspect used to live with her, but suddenly left home without words.
She alleged the suspect returned on April 11, and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her at about 2:30a.m.
Speaking on the incident, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in the Free State, Major General Solly Lesia, said the suspect also threatened to kill the old woman if she told anyone of the cruel act.
Lesia said: “ The aged woman resides alone in Thabong, not knowing the whereabouts of her grandson who used to live with her. On Sunday, 11 April 2021, at about 02:30am, he arrived home and raped her.
“ He threatened to kill her if she notified anyone about the incident. As a result of injuries sustained during the ordeal, the elderly woman was admitted at Bongani Hospital.
“ The suspect is being detained and will appear in court on a charge of rape. ”
She further appealed to the community to take care of the elderly, saying: ” It is shocking to learn about this act by someone close to the victim. The arrest of the perpetrator will ensure that he have his day in court. ”
